Theory & practice

Theory test

I can help prepare you for the theory test which every learner needs to pass. You'll also receive valuable tips and information.

The theory test is divided into two parts:

  1. A multiple-choice test comprising 50 multiple-choice questions covering aspects of the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43.
  2. A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. The pass mark is 44.

Practical test

I regularly get asked how many lessons it will take. As all learners are different, some will pass more quickly than others. Although some theory is necessary, I won't spend hours parked up, using up valuable lesson time, if I think the instruction can be done on the move. I won't hold you back from taking your test when you are ready, but it is a false economy (and potentially dangerous) to try and take your driving test when you are not competent and confident enough to drive independently.

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving errors and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

Book both your theory and practical tests at gov.uk, or call them (0300 2001122). I recommend that you do not use any other websites (unless you like paying unnecessary fees).
